LeAnn Mowery, a woman from Kentucky, USA, suddenly gave birth to a baby in the toilet. Mowry never expected what happened because the mother of two boys did not realize she was pregnant.
Mowery tells this story in the program 'I Did not Know I Was Pregnant' which aired on the channel TLC. This documentary tells the experiences of women who are unaware of pregnancy until delivery of a sudden.
Could a woman did not realize she was pregnant?
As Huffington Post noted, based on statistics from the health agency, one of 450 women are unaware of pregnancy until the 20th week or half of pregnancy. 1 of 2500 people even realized after the baby is born, as happened in the Mowry.
This phenomenon is called cryptic pregnancy. Some people believe, this condition is caused by psychiatric disorders. In fact, 8 percent of women who experience pregnancy cryptic shown to have a mental disorder, while 5 percent was recorded as having schizophrenia. The rest did not find any disturbance and found to be physically fit and mentally.
Under conditions of cryptic pregnancy, the women did not feel nausea, weight gain, even still menstruate regularly. In some cases, the fetus is not even detected by the test pack and always showed negative results.
This is due to the fetus only produce the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in small amounts. HCG is a hormone that 'search' tool to detect pregnancy test packs. If the HCG levels are not sufficient, then the test results will always be negative.
Why the fetus produces only slightly HCG?
According to Marco Del Giudice, a researcher from the University of Turin, there are three things that cause this condition. Among chromosom disorder that makes the fetus does not develop properly, errors in the gene, and the stress suffered by the mother.
As described in the U.S. National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health, the stress that comes from daily routines, such as piling work or thinking about financial issues, may interfere with fetal condition.
Del Giudice said, cryptic pregnancy also have a positive side. The mother will go through tough times during pregnancy, like nausea or weakness of the body such as typically experienced by other pregnant women. Women with a cryptic pregnancy could undergo routine as usual without anxiety.
