German Inflation Rate Slows in June

        By Nina Adam
FRANKFURT--Germany's annual inflation rate slowed sharply in June, as expected, a sign that the European Central Bank's bond purchase program has yet to have its desired effect in Europe's largest economy.
Consumer prices measured according to common European standards, or the HICP, decreased 0.2% from May, pushing down the annual inflation rate to 0.1% in June from 0.7% in May, the federal statistics office said Tuesday, confirming preliminary estimates.
By comparison, the ECB aims to anchor inflation in the entire eurozone at just below 2% over the medium term.
Falling energy prices were behind the sharp drop in the annual rate, Destatis said. They were down 5.9% from June last year.
Destatis also confirmed its preliminary inflation estimates based on national standards. According to this measure, consumer prices slipped 0.1% on the month; they rose 0.3% from June 2014.
Excluding energy prices from the national measure, the annual inflation rate in June would be "significantly higher" at 1.1%, Destatis said.
