But what happened to the Detroit mother Wednesday night has shocked the city's police and residents. "Enough is enough...this is a crisis that needs to stop," Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters.
Police say Garner, 42, was shot during an attempted carjacking on the city's east side. The incident took place outside the Michigan Light Guard Armory, where she worked as a custodian, according to CNN affiliate WDIV.
Garner managed to drive the few blocks to the bus stop where her son and other parents gathered for pickup after basketball practice. It was a fellow parent who dialed 911 after Garner signaled for help.
"She couldn't speak. Blood was coming out of her ears...she was spitting up blood," the unidentified parent told CNN affiliate WXYZ.
Garner was taken to a hospital where she died from her wound.
Police have arrested Ralph Anthony Marshall, 17, in the case. He's been charged with felony murder, felony possession of a firearm and attempted carjacking.
"It just wasn't good enough that as he tried to gain entrance to her car, she drives off and the response of this violent, predatory suspect is he fires a shot," Chief Craig said.
Authorities are now looking for another teen in connection with the murder, who's been identified by police as Rayvon Roscoe Smith, 18. Police say the two were spotted on an area surveillance camera shortly before the incident.
Garner also has a 15-year-old daughter.
"What could you say to an 11-year-old and a 15-year-old, who lost their parent? What can you say -- because you can't bring her back," the children's aunt told WXYZ.
