The NHL announced Tuesday that the former All-Star has been suspended for 20 games for a violation of drug program administered by the league and the NHL Players’ Association.
“While recovering from an injury I suffered this past fall, I tried a treatment that I believed would help speed up the healing process,“ Horcoff said in a statement released by the Ducks. “Although I was unaware that this treatment was not permitted under NHL rules, that is no excuse whatsoever. I should have done my research ... I accept full responsibility for my actions and I am sorry."
The substance Horcoff tested positive for was not identified in the league’s statement that announced the suspension. Due to the violation, Horcoff has automatically been placed in NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for possible treatment.
“This morning we were made aware of the situation regarding Shawn Horcoff,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said in a statement. “The Anaheim Ducks organization fully supports the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. We will also continue to support Shawn as a player and person throughout this process. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Horcoff, 37, was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers and spent 12 years with the organization before he was traded to the Dallas Stars ahead of the 2013-14 season. He represented the Oilers in the 2008 All-Star Game.
Horcoff is currently in his first season in Anaheim. He has compiled 162 goals and 285 assists (447 points) in his 12-season NHL career. He forfeits $357,526 in salary as he serves the ban.
Sean Hill (2007), Zenon Konopka (2014) and Carter Ashton (2014) were the other players to receive 20-game bans for violations of the NHL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
