Yes, Adams (or AmAd as no one has taken to calling her) has signed on for an upcoming television adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s 2006 book Sharp Objects. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the drama is being shopped to cable and streaming outlets with no landing spot confirmed just yet. Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc VallĂ©e has signed on to helm the pilot and UnREAL co-creator Marti Noxon will serve as the showrunner in addition to contributing writing and executive producing duties.
Here’s what Sharp Objects will have in store for viewers according to The Hollywood Reporter:
“Sharp Objects centers on reporter Camille Preaker (Adams) — fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital — who faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille hardly has spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims — a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story — and survive this homecoming.”
A zany carefree romp, you say? *reads description over again* Oh, that’s much more serious.
It’s easy to forget, but Amy Adams has put in some time on TV before shifting into a perennial Oscar contender. All six fans of CBS’ short-lived Rob Lowe + Pantoliano Joe drama Dr. Vegas might remember Adams from the series, although it’s a safer bet her run as Katy on The Office will spring to mind first. No matter where you recognize Adams from, we’ll keep you posted on this intriguing series as details tumble out.
