Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards threatens to cut LSU football to help balance state budget - Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has a deal for lawmakers: pass my tax increase plan or I’ll cut LSU football.

Currently, Louisiana’s budget includes a deficit of $940 million, according to the Times-Picayune, and the state needs to close that gap before June 30th.

Beyond a tax hike that is being described as “the largest tax increase in the history of Louisiana,” the Democratic governor has suggested that college campuses will be forced to declare bankruptcy, leading to massive layoffs and class cancellations.

If spring classes are cancelled, athletes were instead receive “incompletes” that will make them ineligible to play in the fall.

“Student athletes across the state would be ineligible to play next semester,” Edwards said.

“I don't say this to scare you. But I am going to be honest with you.”

If there’s anything that will spur politicians to pass a budget, it’s the threat of spending Saturdays without Tigers football.
