Slick Rick Finally Becomes an American Citizen - After a 23-year long legal battle, Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Martin Lloyd Walters (aka “Slick Rick”) scored a victory Friday. He's finally an American citizen!

The English-born artist was sworn in at an official ceremony alongside fellow New Yorkers. “I am so proud of this moment – and so honored to finally become an American citizen,” says Slick Rick. “This has been a long time coming for me, and I am relieved to finally put this long chapter behind me.”

“I want to thank everyone—my family, friends and fans—who have supported me and stuck by me over these 23 years. I am truly blessed,” he said.

Slick Rick moved to the Bronx with his family when he was eleven years old. His music career took off just seven years later when he was only eighteen. He was introduced to the world by Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew when featured on the hip-hop classics “The Show” and “La-Di-Da-Di.”

His debut album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick was number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It featured “Children’s Story,” “Teenage Love” and “Hey Young World.”

His work has been referenced in many present day recording artists, including Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Pitbull, Will.I.Am, Amy Winehouse and Big Sean.

As for what we can expect next, “Stay tuned,” he teases, “I will have more to announce soon.”

Congratulations to Slick Rick! We look forward to what’s in store.
