Benefits Loss Could be Behind Labor Force Call

10:38 EDT - The expiration of federal benefits for the long-term unemployed at the end of last year may have contributed to April's renewed decline in the nation's labor force after a surprising surge early this year, Morgan Stanley economist Ted Wieseman says. "With prospects for a retroactive extension of benefits dead in Congress now... it appears this impact is now showing up," he says. The loss of benefits which require recipients to continue their job searches could lead many discouraged workers to drop out of the labor force. (jonathan.house@wsj.com)
