ATHENS--Greek banks will remain closed for six days from Monday and cash withdrawals will be limited to 60 euros per account per day, a senior government official said early Monday.
By Nektaria Stamouli
Greece shut down its banking system, ordering lenders to stay closed as the work week began Monday and its central bank moved to impose controls to prevent money from flooding out of the country. These steps, after five years of debt crisis, put Greece closer than ever to a potential exit from the euro and pushes the single currency itself into uncharted waters.
The decision came after the European Central Bank--meeting in an emergency session Sunday--capped a lifeline of emergency funds that has been sustaining Greek banks as depositors have pulled out money in recent weeks.
