France Wants Greece to Make Proposals so Talks Can Restart

        By Noemie Bisserbe
PARIS--France will "do everything" to ensure that Greece stays in the eurozone, the country's Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Tuesday, two days after Greek voters put the country's future within the currency bloc in greater doubt by rejecting a bailout plan in a referendum.
"France is convinced that we can't afford the risk of Greece leaving the eurozone," said Mr. Valls speaking on French radio. An exit would threaten global economic growth and represent a significant political risk, he said.
The leaders of Germany and France on Monday called on Greece to craft urgent proposals to prevent Greece's exit from the eurozone, leaving the door open to negotiations.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande have met in Paris to shore up the eurozone's most important alliance after weeks in which Berlin and Paris have appeared increasingly split over how to end the standoff with Athens.
Faced with an emboldened government in Athens and a growing economic crisis in Greece, pressure is mounting on the French and German leaders to forge a common strategy.
Greece faces its European creditors at an impromptu summit of eurozone leaders later Tuesday in Brussels.
