Badgers cheerleaders barraged by snowballs: Bombs away on refs, cheer squad - The Wisconsin Badgers cheerleaders didn’t have much to cheer about after their No. 25 ranked Wisconsin lost to No. 20 Northwestern, 13-7. They had even less cause for merriment after being pelted with snowballs from fans – their own fans that is – who bombarded the cheer squad, refs, heck even the players, with winter’s grenades following an all-around foul loss.

Reports Wisconsin’s 247 Sports on Nov. 22: “During and after the defeat, angry Badger fans fired snowballs at just about everyone involved, including the cheerleaders. At halftime, Wisconsin's cheer squad was forced to leave the field after the Badgers trailed 10-0 at the break.”

Wisconsin had three touchdowns taken off the board – two of which were pulled back on the Badgers' final possession of the game. The last of the no-TD calls was certainly the most damaging – and dubious. Officials ruled that UW wide receiver Jazz Peavy was “bobbling the football” as he fell out of bounds, thus Peavy did “not complete the process of the catch.”

Fans continued to demonstrate their rabid disagreement, assaulting the Big Ten officials with snowballs as they scurried into the tunnel flanked by security. More than a foot of snow fell Friday on Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, leaving fans plenty of ammo.

“Wisconsin's student section is apparently bored enough by the game that there's a snowball fight breaking out over there,” tweeted out ESPN reporter Jesse Temple. A few minutes later, Temple tweeted: “Holy smokes. Students look like they're now aiming all their snowballs at the UW cheerleaders behind the end zone. What's wrong with people?”

Although the cheer squad returned for the second half, they stayed out of the “kill zone.” Temple tweeted a video link of the incident.

“Wisconsin cheerleaders getting pegged with snowballs by their own fans,” tweeted Wisconsin TV reporter Elise Menaker. “Cheerleaders had to go in the tunnel and hideout. #notcool.”

The University announced that anyone caught throwing snowballs would be ejected – and they made good on the promise, tossing out 110 fans – 50 for chucking snow and ice – and issued 24 citations, reports the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. In addition, there were 25 calls for first aid, many suffering bloody noses after they got reamed in the mug with a snowball.

It’s ok Badgers, your cheerleaders and spirit squad will be back next game, though they may have to wear helmets.
