Fox Glacier Helicopter Crash Kills Seven

Seven Die as Helicopter Crashes on New Zealand's Fox Glacier - A helicopter crashed Saturday on New Zealand’s Fox Glacier, a remote region popular with tourists. All seven people on board were killed, police said.

Four of the dead were believed to be from the U.K. and the other two from Australia, they said. The U.K. foreign office later confirmed the deaths of four British nationals.

The terrain was making it difficult to reach the scene. Rescue helicopters spotted the wreckage in a crevasse in the glacier.

"We are liaising closely with local authorities and are providing consular assistance," a spokesperson for the U.K. foreign office said in an e-mailed statement.

Thousands of tourists visit Fox Glacier every year, with helicopter flights a common way of reaching the remote region on the country’s South Island.
