Masked Raiders Attack Chinese Security Checkpoints in Inner Mongolia Read - Thirteen people were injured after an estimated 100 masked raiders attacked and damaged Chinese government security checkpoint buildings in Northern China on Sunday. While the attackers escaped, reports indicate that Chinese authorities were able to identify some of them.

Authorities are looking at a possible "provincial border dispute" as the motive for the attack as the area between Ejin Banner county and Jinta county is reportedly claimed by both Inner Mongolians and residents of nearby Gansu province.

The attack was carried out early morning at Ejin Banner county, and lasted about two hours. According to a report from Global Times, among those who were hurt were "herdsmen and farmers defending the frontier."

Armed with sticks and pepper spray the personnel manning the checkpoint were badly beaten, then tied up and left freezing outside. Some valuables were also reportedly stolen. Additional reports state that bulldozers were used to damage buildings and vehicles in the area. The attack left the buildings mostly destroyed.

According to Chinese Official Li Yanbo, the area has long been the source of dispute among locals since the 60's up to the present. In fact, several clashes have been reported in the past.

A similar instance happened earlier in September, in the same outpost when masked men tried to intimidate staff with sticks.
