'The X-Files' preview: 7 revelations about the new limited series (video) - You don't have to be an X-Phile to be excited about "The X-Files" limited series coming to Fox (12) on Jan. 24, 2016. If you haven't been following the teaser tidbits that have been coming out since filming began in Vancouver, B.C., a new, extended preview offers plenty of hints of what's to come.

"The X-Files Re-Opened" is more than 20 minutes' worth of tantalizing teases about the miniseries, which picks up the story of FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) after "The X-Files" ended its original run, back in 2002.

Those of us who loved the show when it was at its height -- yep, that's me raising my hand -- were troubled and turned off by the last few seasons, and by the disappointing second "X-Files" movie, 2008's dud, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe."

With all the wrong turns series creator Chris Carter and his team took, along with an overarching aliens + government conspiracy mythology that all but choked the life out of the show by the time it was over, the new "X-Files" six-episode "event series" has a lot of work to do to recapture the components that made the show great.

The featurette, on the "X-Files" YouTube channel features interviews with stars Duchovny and Anderson, as well as Carter, "X-Files" veteran writer-producers Glen Morgan and Darin Morgan, and members of the stunt and special-effects team.

Among the things we learn in the video:

1. Episodes 1 and 6 will feature the show's "mythology": The episodes in the middle will be in the "Monster of the Week" category that gave "The X-Files" some of its very best episodes.

2. Mulder and Scully have broken up since we saw them last (count me a fan of this development, though I know others disagree), but the miniseries again finds them sharing emotional intimacy, frustration, mutual appreciation, and maybe some of that old spark.

3. There will be at least a few moments of humor -- again, count me a fan of that development.

4. Some familiar faces return -- somehow: The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B. Davis) seemed to have perished in the original, but he turns up in the new miniseries; Mitch Pileggi is back as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Skinner has been an assistant director for a loooong time); and the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood) also somehow survived and appear.

5. We see some new faces: Joel McHale appears as Tad O'Malley, an ultra-conservative talk-show host who happens to share Mulder's theories about extraterrestrial intelligence and cover-ups; and Annet Mahendru, who's been such a standout in FX's "The Americans" as a Soviet agent caught up in spycraft, guest stars as an alien abductee.

6. Remember that baby?: Don't go looking for that baby of Scully and Mulder's in the new series. In the teaser, Scully has an emotional scene with Mulder where she talks about the decision to give the child up for adoption. You can tell Scully's upset, because she calls Mulder "Fox."

7. The "I Want to Believe" poster makes an appearance: Mulder's beloved office poster shows up, as Carter refers to how iconic it became for the show's fans. Some of whom, may I add, have replicas of the poster in their home offices -- yes, that's me, raising my hand again.

Have a look at the preview, and let me know if it makes you full of anticipation, or dread. "The X-Files" limited series premieres on Fox (12) on Sunday, Jan. 24, and then moves to its Monday time slot, on Jan. 25.
