Andy Murray's father-in-law collapses - A third-round Australian Open match between American Madison Keys and former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic was interrupted Saturday evening when Ivanovic’s coach, Nigel Sears, collapsed as he walked up the stairs inside Rod Laver Arena.

Sears, who is also father-in-law to world No. 2 Andy Murray, was taken to a nearby hospital after being placed on a stretcher and hooked up to an IV drip. A report was issued at the end of the match, which Keys won, that he was alert, responsive and “making his usual jokes” in the hospital.

The match was delayed just before 8 p.m. local time and resumed at 8:45, with Ivanovic leading 6-4, 1-0.

Channel 7, the Australian network, reported that Sears was feeling unwell and left Ivanovic’s player box after the first game of the second set.

A witness told USA TODAY Sports that Sears fell backwards as he walked up the stairs inside Rod Laver Arena from the player’s box to the nearest exit.

“It took at least 10 minutes for paramedics to arrive,” said Carolyn Dreaver, who lives in Christchurch, New Zealand. “There was no one around who knew much to do.”

The players were taken off court as officials announced the match would be suspended just after 8:05 p.m. Keys and Ivanovic both returned to the locker room.

Murray was on court playing his third round match inside Margaret Court Arena, adjacent to this tournament’s main stadium.

Sears was “conscious, talking and sitting up” according to Jamie Murray, the brother to Andy who is a standout doubles player, he told the Press Association, a British news service, just before 9 p.m.

Ivanovic, a finalist here in 2008, was told by officials to “take as much time as she needed before the match resumed.

Murray finished his match just shy of 10 p.m., winner over Joao Sousa in four sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. He walked straight off court, met by his mother Judy, and left Melbourne Park, foregoing any post-match press duties.

A few minutes later, Keys completed the win over Ivanovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Neither player attended the post-match news conference.
