Hamill, who played the farmboy-turned-Jedi Knight in the three original Star Wars films and returned to the role in last year's The Force Awakens, said: 'Fans are writing and asking all these questions: "I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out." They say to me: "Could Luke be gay?"'
'I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.'
The Sun points out that Luke was only romantically linked with one woman in the films — and awkwardly, she turned out to be his sister.
Hamill's comments come after remarks to The Daily Beast by JJ Abrams, the producer of the Star Wars films and director of The Force Awakens, that the Star Wars movies would soon feature their first openly gay character.
When the website asked him last month whether there was a future for gay characters in the franchise, he said: 'Of course! When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.
'I would love it,' he continued. 'To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counter-intuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.'
Hamill appeared in a brief cameo in The Force Awakens, which is a sequel to his last film as Skywalker, 1983's Return of the Jedi. He will return in the as-yet-unnamed next installment in the franchise, in 2017.
Abrams' revival of the Star Wars film series has been praised for its diversity, with The Force Awakens' two new lead characters being a female scavenger, Rey, played by Daisy Ridley; and a black former stormtrooper, Finn, played by Joseph Boyega.
