Stamp Price Drop

U.S. postage stamps will be 2 cents cheaper starting Sunday - The price of a stamp will go down two cents this weekend.

A temporary rate increase granted to the U.S. Postal Service in January 2014 by its regulators to help offset the lingering effects of the most recent recession is ending.

As a result, starting on April 10 a stamp for a 1-ounce letter will cost 47 cents, down from 49 cents. International letters will go down by 5 cents to $1.15, and postcards will be 1 cent cheaper, at 34 cents.

The Postal Service fought the change, and said Thursday it adds up to about $2 billion in much-needed revenue annually.

“Given our precarious financial condition and ongoing business needs, the price reduction required by the PRC exacerbates our losses,” said USPS Postmaster General Megan Brennan in a release. The Postal Service estimates that it lost $7 billion in revenue in 2009 alone.
