Australia's Job Market Making Slow Gains

0048 GMT [Dow Jones] There are signs in Australia that long-dormant consumer and business confidence are starting to turn up. But is the change fast enough to prevent a further rise in unemployment? Government data this week show the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell by 0.5% to 408,658 in October in seasonally adjusted terms, the fourth consecutive fall. Consumer confidence has also been rising, albeit at an agonizingly slow pace. Craig James, chief economist at CommSec, says the unemployment benefits data is a useful guide at the moment given that the government statistician's monthly labor force data has been hopelessly unreliable over recent months.
