"Happy abandonment day... @katehudson," he wrote. Ouch. (It should be noted that Oliver and Kate consider their mother Goldie Hawn's partner, Kurt Russell, to be their father.)
Bill responded to the post by giving an interview to the Daily Mail in which he essentially distanced himself even further from his kids.
"I say to them now, 'I set you free,'" he said. "Oliver's Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate."
The situation was messy, but as it turns out, there was actually a silver lining to it all.
On Tuesday's episode of "Watch What Happens Live," Hudson opened up about that Instagram post -- his most popular -- to host Andy Cohen.
When asked if he regretted posting the pic, Oliver responded:
"No, and I'll tell you why. I was actually just talking to you guys about this. It actually started a dialogue. I haven't talked to my father in 12 years. In my sort of dark, crazy sense of humor, I posted this 'Happy Abandonment Day' thing, which, you know, everyone went crazy about. I was just trying to be funny. At the end of the day it was a good thing. We're communicating now. I had an amazing three-hour conversation with him. We're texting and we're trying to see each other. We might be mending something."
Cohen thanked Oliver for sharing the story, agreeing that his photo resulted in a positive outcome. But when he suggested sister Kate might get "in on the action," Oliver just responded, "We'll see."
