Facebook's Oculus Rift VR headset costs $600, launches in March - The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset costs $600, Facebook-owned Oculus VR announced this morning.

Pre-orders are available right here; there's a one per customer limit, and it should arrive before March 31.

The headset, dubbed "Oculus Rift," provides a virtual reality experience to users by plugging in to a powerful PC. The PC then runs virtual reality games and other experiences through a wire to the headset. The effect is a shockingly real sense of immersion — so-called "presence — that makes you feel as though you're actually wherever you're looking at.

Standing at the top of The Wall in the "Game of Thrones" VR experience? It feels like you're actually there, vertigo and all.

In a diving suit, deep under the ocean, watching a massive blue whale float past? Its enormity is evident — menacing, even.

This is the concept of "presence" in virtual reality, and it's something that Oculus VR's headset nails as well or better than anyone else out there.

Facebook co-founder and leader Mark Zuckerberg was so enamored with the experience that he fought for his company to outright buy Oculus VR back in March 2014 for $2 billion. No joke!

Thankfully, you won't have to pay that much for the Rift headset. Even better? Anyone buying an Oculus Rift in 2016 gets two games free with the headset: a dogfighting space combat game named "EVE Valkyrie" and a platformer named "Lucky's Tale."

You'll also get an Xbox One gamepad in the box, as Oculus struck a deal with Microsoft so that every headset comes with a gamepad. There are also motion controllers, dubbed "Oculus Touch," which will arrive at some point in the second half of 2016.
